Launch of the Deep Penetrating AnchorPublished 15.09.09 Two full-scale anchors, each of 75 tons, were successfully installed at the Gjøa field in August 2009 and are now going through the final tests and and commissioning at the field. The Deep Penetrating Anchor is expected to be qualified by class society in the last quarter of 2009. The anchoring system is specially suited for mooring of offshore floating structures in soft seabed sediments, such as FPSO's, rigs, flexible risers and wind mills. The anchors are based on a patented concept and has been under development for more than 10 years. Extensive theoretical analyses and model scale tests have been performed, the most recent at the Troll O2 field, during autumn 2008, in co-operation with SatoilHydro. StatoilHydro has been a partner on the project since 1998 and has contributed with both funding and technical expertise. The project is also supported by the Norwegian Research Council. Calculations prove that Deep Penetrating Anchor is a very competitive and cost effective solution compared to traditional suction anchors. The production costs are low and the installation process is quick and simplified, giving the customers increased value on their investments. The following animation video shows the installation process of the Deep Penetrating Anchor:
