Mongstad SMIL

By the utilisation of advanced technology and competence NLI is contributing to the reduction of pollution and a more environmentally-friendly Mongstad.

In the autumn of 2008, StatoilHydro awarded a major contract to NLI for mechanical, piping and electrical work for the SMIL project at Mongstad (Statoil Mongstad miljøinvesteringer). Following significant effort over a considerable period of time aimed at larger land-based plants, this contract represents a breakthrough for NLI with a direct contract from StatoilHydro and recognition of NLI as an important supplier of turnkey, advanced technology facilities and equipment to the oil and gas industry.

The SMIL project is a cooperative project involving several NLI companies and utilising the whole of our broad knowledge and competence. NLI Alfr. Andersen is the contracting party and is performing all structural and mechanical work, while NLI Contracting is responsible for the management and coordination of the work both off and on site and NLI Elektro is undertaking all electrical, heat tracing and instrumentation activities. Project management personnel are provided by NLI’s engineering companies. The contract represents the largest single order ever awarded to NLI with a total value of some 450 million kroner. At its peak, the project will employ approximately 300 personnel on site at Mongstad.

The purpose of the SMIL project is to improve the environment around the Mongstad refinery by increasing the capacity for the removal of H2S and sulphur. This involves the installation of a Sulphur Recovery Unit, an H2S Recovery Unit and a Sour Water Stripper Unit. All units including upgrading of the existing facilities are to be installed in a hot plant, with the exception of a short shut-down period for coupling the new units to the existing plant.
